In order to optimize and balance the energy consumption of each nodes so as to prolong the service life of wireless sensor networks（WSNs）

an optimized energy consumption routing protocol

defined as E-AODV

based on AODV is proposed

which prefers to involve nodes with higher residual energy into routing and select a path with less energy consumption as a routing.In addition

two mechanisms which are dynamic modulating transmitting power and passive refreshing routing mechanisms are introduced.The result of simulation by NS-2 shows that

compared with the traditional AODV

E-AODV effectively balances energy of each node

and reduces the overall energy consumption of the network

and prolongs the lifetime of the network.
